From the Principal

Judith Nel Principal Parkside SchoolTena koutou katoa - Welcome to the Parkside School website.

Parkside School is a resource for the Franklin district. At Parkside School we strive to create the most effective learning programme for students aged from five to twenty-one years, to maximise their potential in preparation for the whole of life. Our specialist learning environments ensure that each young person has access to a personal, individualised, learning opportunity. The core pre-requisite to a Child’s success at Parkside School is the open, co-operative relationship forged between the Family-Whanau and the School.

Special Education is a part of the continuum of New Zealand Education.  Parkside provides a full complement of choice for Families/Whanau in the Franklin district. Base School, located in Wellington Street provides intensive teaching and therapist support for learners with the most profound challenges.

We believe that all Students able to access a mainstream campus should have that opportunity. Therefore we have established close working relationships with our local schools to establish eleven satellite classrooms. Parkside Staff develop and teach individualised programmes to meet the Satellite Students’ needs as well as supporting integration within the host school.

In addition our Specialist Outreach Teachers travel to local schools to programme for Students with special educational learning needs and to work alongside mainstream school staff. Thus Parkside provides a full continuum of support to meet the learning requirements of all young people.

Our Specialist Individual Educational programme provides a link between the Te Whariki curriculum and the Key competencies inherent in the New Zealand Curriculum Framework.  The positive implementation of our service is based on the premise that effectiveness of programming and outcome, rather than issue of placement, is the critical factor to a learner’s success.

At Parkside School the holistic programme provides a school-based curriculum responsive to the learner’s changing developmental needs and capacities. We believe that when a young person is having fun and engaged with an activity then learning is maximised.

We hope that the information in our website assists with decisions concerning the best educational outcome for your child. We would be pleased to assist with any further queries.

I extend to you a personal invitation to come and visit our school.

Kind Regards
Judith Nel
